Touch

In thinking about the art and formula for healing and thriving - movement, stillness, inward facing energy, outward facing, and the integration of all of the balancing and opposing forces - touch is major. Our skin is our largest sensory interface with the world. It is the membrane between the internal and the external. Touch is the first sense we develop in the womb, and if newborns are deprived of touch they suffer from slowed growth, as well as behavioral and cognitive disorders. Studies show that patients who are touched by their doctors have better outcomes, because therapeutic touch lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increases oxytocin. Oxytocin is the goods. Touch, Massage, Bodywork, etc. increases activity along the vagus nerve that runs from the brain stem to the abdomen. Stimulating the vagus nerve is beneficial for digestion, and increases serotonin, which is a natural antidepressant. Touch is a necessity. So - touch people today. Go out of your way, whether it’s a hand on a shoulder, an extra long hug, or a spontaneous shoulder rub – it’s a beautiful intention on Christmas. Peace! Julie
