Namaste: How long have you been with Namaste?

Cori: I am a Namaste Newbie coming onboard this past November, but have been a Registered Dietitian (RDN) for 7 years.

Namaste: What inspired you to pursue a career in health and wellness?

Cori: This is a long story but I will try to give it to you in a nutshell! As a teenager I started to have a lot digestive health issues. After years of seeing doctors, undergoing extensive medical testing and not getting very far I began to research nutrition and make dietary changes on my own. I also took up yoga to better manage my growing anxiety. The light bulb went off...what I put in my body and how I manage stress has a major impact on how I feel! Why wasn’t nutrition, food and mindfulness ever emphasized in all of the years I saw health professionals?! It became clear that there was a missing link in traditional healthcare and I wanted to be part of filling that gap. I wanted to help facilitate and support individuals in their journey towards better health and wellness. So after years of working towards a career in the fashion industry I went back to school to earn my Registered Dietitian certification and haven’t turned back since!

Namaste: How does nutrition play a part in someone’s overall fitness & wellness plan?

Cori: Nutrition is at the foundation of health and wellness. What you eat and drink on a daily basis affects so much more than your physique- it plays a critical role in your energy levels, the condition of your hair and skin, how often you get sick and even the quality of your sleep. Fueling your body with the right nutrients also ensures optimal results from your fitness and exercise efforts.

Namaste: As someone living in such a fast-paced city, how do you keep your physical and mental health in balance?

Cori: I would be lying if I said I had this all figured out! It is a challenge to maintain a healthy balance (especially in the chaotic landscape of NYC). One thing that has really helped me is accepting that life is continually shifting. I try to stay more flexible in my mindset so that I can flow with life’s changes instead of spending so much energy trying to resist them. I’m also less hard on myself for having a sweet treat or missing a week of exercise than I once was.

Everyone has to find the right balance for themselves because it looks different for all of us. Things that really improve my personal well-being include a weekly yoga practice, daily meditation, connecting with friends more often, eating less processed food (especially added sugars!), getting under trees whenever possible and taking deep mindful breaths (it is incredible how often people forget about that last one!)

Namaste: What does self-care mean to you?

Cori: Self-care means being kinder to myself, staying mindful about what I put in and on my body and doing things that make me feel more vibrant (like getting out into nature and dancing like I have no care in the world). It is so easy to get distracted by life’s obligations, but I have learned, from my own experience and through coaching so many different types of people, that we can’t fully show up for others without first taking good care of ourselves. When we nourish ourselves (mind, body and spirit) we are better equipped to uplift others and contribute to society in a positive way.

Namaste: What does the TERM ‘Namaste’ mean to you?

Cori: For me Namaste means staying humble and remembering that we are all continually learning from one another on this journey.

Namaste: What’s your advice to clients who know they need to start a fitness & wellness routine, but are not sure where to start?

Cori: You know yourself best so be honest about your needs. If you are someone who requires a lot of support and accountability to make healthy changes (or stick to them), seek out the right professionals to help on your journey. If you are easily overwhelmed than focus on changing just 1 lifestyle or eating habit at a time. Also, there is never going to be an ideal time to get started so start where you are today. The sooner you begin making healthy changes the sooner you will start to see results and reach your goal(s)!

Namaste: What’s an intention you set for 2019?

Cori: To deepen my meditation practice and be a better plant mama!

How you nourish your body significantly impacts the way you look and feel. At Namaste, we understand that what works for one person does not necessarily work for another. We assist YOU in finding YOUR healthy balance. To learn more about our New Nutrition Programs click here!
