Meet: Lilly B., an exceptional Yoga & Meditation Teacher and Wellness Pro Spotlight for the week!

Lilly is a professional dance artist, yoga instructor, and meditation teacher. In order to bring a greater body, mind, and spirit awareness to her art, she delved into the practice of yoga seven years ago. Lilly completed her 200 hour yoga teacher training in 2013 and has been teaching both private clients and group classes ever since. In 2017 she completed her 500 hour certification under Dana Slamp at Pure Yoga NYC with an emphasis on yoga therapeutics and meditation. Lilly is currently working towards a greater 1000 hour yoga therapist certification. She brings a mindful, positive, and bright energy to her teaching.

Namaste: How long have you been with Namaste?

Lilly: Just under two years!

Namaste: What inspired you to pursue a career in health and wellness?

Lilly: I grew up as a dancer, and I realized early on that was what I was going to do with my career. While studying dance in college, I discovered yoga. Initially, I saw it completely change the way I danced, and soon enough, I saw it change the way I was living and approaching life. My ability to cope with stress shifted. My relationship to my body shifted. I discovered self-care. I felt, for the first time, my internal power. Bottom line, yoga and meditation had a massive and positive effect on my life. It was when I moved to NYC to pursue a career in dance that I started teaching yoga. I quickly experienced how fulfilling it was to share this practice with others that it became my main focus. I have since gone on to do extensive training in becoming a yoga therapist, honing my skills to give clients not only want they want but what they need in order to achieve maximum health and wellbeing.

Namaste: As someone living in such a fast-paced city, how do you keep your physical and mental health in balance?

Lilly: I have to be mindful of the fact that I do live in a fast-paced city and take moments of pause, to consciously slow down every day. This usually manifests in my self-care rituals. I begin each morning with a cup of warm lemon water and a meditation in order to clearly set my daily intentions. (This makes it easier to carry a sense of mindfulness with me throughout the day). On top of my meditation/mindfulness practice, I try my best to eat foods that will give me sustained energy, especially as I run around the city working with clients. It goes without saying that exercise is also key to keeping my physical and mental health in balance. Treating myself to bodywork such as a massage or an acupuncture treatment is always a great reset when I need it. For me, balance begins with listening - listening to where I am at in any given moment and making healthy choices from that deeper awareness.

Namaste: What does self-care mean to you?

Lilly: Self-care means deep listening. Listening to what the body and mind needs and honoring that. Self-care can look drastically different from one day to the next and from one person to the next.

Namaste: What does the term 'Namaste' mean to you?

Lilly: The light in me honors the light in you. I teach yoga to preschoolers and explain Namaste to them as “the kindest & best part in me sees the kindest & best part in you”.

Namaste: What’s your advice to clients who know they need to start a fitness & wellness routine, but don’t know where to start?

Lilly: First and foremost, get clear on what your specific intentions and goals are and start with one thing. Is it that you’re most wanting to find peace of mind through meditation? A deeper relationship with the elf through yoga? A clearer idea on what you should eat and why? Start with one goal and take action. The rest will follow, trust me.

Namaste: What's an intention you've set for 2019?

Lilly: To honor my needs. I have a tendency to push my needs aside for the needs of others and I’ve chosen to be extra mindful of that this year.
